52 Weeks Of Trying New Things | Week 11 | Making My Own Natural Deodorant

Organic to Green - Liquid Coconut Oil

I’ve officially reached hippie status.  This week I tried making my own natural deodorant.  I’m not typically a DIY type of person, but after trying countless brands of natural deodorant and only finding one that I considered both safe and effective, I wanted to see if I could make something comparable myself that would save me some money.

My main issue with natural deodorants has been that almost all of them contain baking soda, and my body does not react well to that.  I always ended up getting a rash when using them for more than a few days.  I searched online extensively and found this recipe using arrowroot powder that I modified slightly.  It only took about 15-20 minutes to make the first batch, so I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t the arduous, messy project that I had imagined it would be.

Money breakdown:

  1. I typically spend between $8-$12 per stick of natural deodorant that I buy, and I’d say each one lasts around a month.
  2. I spent $40 on the supplies to make my own ( I already had coconut oil and essential oils on hand so I didn’t have to spend anything on those)
  3. The amount I made in one batch should last about a month, and I have enough supplies to make at least 6 more batches, so I should be able to save a few dollars making my own.

The most important question – Does it work??    So far, the answer is yes.  I’ve been applying it twice a day and it has kept me smelling clean.   I may play around with different essential oils next time to see which scents I like the best.

Are you interested in switching to a natural deodorant?  It’s definitely worth making the switch, whether you buy one or make your own.  If you switch over from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant, note that it will take some time for your body to adjust to being allowed to sweat again and properly detox.

Let me know in the comments below if you’ve tried making your own personal care products.  I’d love to hear about your experience or answer any questions you have about the process!

Thanks for reading!

  1. Oh, are you a hippie now? hahaha, it’s so cool that you made your own deodorant. A long time ago I used to make my own hair moisturizing cream with Aloe vera. But it’s so hard because you have to peel the Aloe vera and it has thorns. But it’s good for so many things.
