It’s hard to believe it’s already Week 20 of my Trying New Things Challenge. Recently my husband mentioned that I should try something called plogging, and I was immediately intrigued! Plogging originated in Sweden and the word is a combination of “jogging” and “plocka upp” (Swedish for “pick up”). Basically, you bring gloves and a bag and take time to clean up trash and litter while you’re jogging. At the end, you recycle as much as you can and dispose of the rest in appropriate places. Such a simple way to help reduce waste and clean up the environment. I’ve always been passionate about recycling as much as I can, so I loved the idea of combining this with one of my other passions, fitness! I started small with plogging and picked up a few items of trash while on a jog in the park with Sasha, our dog. It didn’t take long and I loved being able to help clean up the park. Since then, I’ve also tried plalking (walking and picking up trash). It’s amazing how much people litter, even in our fairly small apartment complex!
I’ve found tons of plastic bottles, wrappers, Coke caps (which I get excited about because I collect the codes), and a few days ago even found someone’s Social Security Card out in the parking lot and was glad I was able to return it to the owner. As you can tell, I’m a fan of this Swedish trend and I’m planning to organize a plogging meetup locally for Earth Day in April. If you’re not in North Carolina and want to join me in plogging wherever you are, use the hashtag #ploggingwithTPT on any pictures that you share. It doesn’t have to be big; any piece of trash you pick up will help! I’d love to re-post your photos on my Instagram and Facebook pages to spread the word!
I think this will be a great practice to continue on my travels as well – what better way to give back to any country you are visiting than to help recycle and remove trash and litter?
What do you think? Are you ready to join me in plogging or plalking this year? Let me know below!
