As someone who gets headaches fairly frequently, I’ve been hoping to find a natural remedy for the pain that doesn’t involve taking NSAIDS. Among other undesirable side effects, NSAIDS severely damage your gut lining, so since I’ve struggled with a leaky gut and I’m working to keep it healthy, I don’t want to ruin my progress by popping some pills. Most days I can just tough it out through the pain, but when I get a headache at night, they keep me from sleeping and that’s when I have taken pills out of desperation. As someone who enjoys hiking and camping, I’m always on the lookout for healthy snacks that travel well and give me energy. When I select my snacks, I look for a high protein content (helps with muscle building and repair, satiety, and weight management), no refined sugar and no artificial preservatives. It’s more than a little challenging to find snacks that fit the bill and also taste good. Recently I was listening to one of my favorite health and nutrition podcasts called The Genius Life, and Max Lugavere mentioned how much he enjoyed something called Biltong. Since I grew up in Asia, I’m sure no one is surprised that I’m open to trying Eastern medicine-based therapies like cupping. I’ve had some severe shoulder and neck pain this past week that restricted my range of motion and didn’t seem to be improving with stretching and heat. I knew Michael Phelps had used cupping during the Olympics for recovery, and I’ve also had several friends share their positive experiences about how cupping helped relieve chronic pain, so I thought it was worth a shot. I’ve officially reached hippie status. This week I tried making my own natural deodorant. I’m not typically a DIY type of person, but after trying countless brands of natural deodorant and only finding one that I considered both safe and effective, I wanted to see if I could make something comparable myself that would save me some money. I’m in the market for a new pair of glasses and recently discovered Warby Parker’s Free Home-Try-On Program. You start with taking a quiz on their website about the frame shape, color, and size that you’re looking for. Once you select the 5 you want to try, they ship them out to you for free! Once you receive your selections, you have 5 days to test them out and figure out which one(s) you like the best. After 5 days, you mail them back with the included pre-paid shipping label and have NO obligation to buy. If you do end up liking any of them and want to buy a pair, you can easily add your prescription and order them online! Since I don’t currently have vision insurance, I really appreciate that all their frames are affordable, with options starting at only $95! Another thing I appreciate about Warby Parker is that for every pair sold, they donate a pair to someone in need. How cool! Below are the 5 frames I tried out at home! 45-degree weather didn’t stop me from satisfying my sweet tooth at the heladeria (ice cream shop) known as La Super Michoacana today. I’d seen a lot of positive press about this dessert spot hidden in a strip mall, but had never gotten the chance to try it. We finished lunch at our favorite Vietnamese restaurant and plugged the address into the GPS – it turns out it was only a few steps away and we had never even seen it because it’s so well hidden. Once you find it, the exterior will surely catch your eye with its bright and inviting colors and matching truck outside! At church, we’ve been attending a Sunday School class called the Art of Marriage, and have talked about tools to build your relationship and improve communication. For those of you that are not married, don’t stop reading yet – many of these principles apply to any close relationship that you want to improve or learn more about. In class, we have mainly talked about the 5 Love Languages and the book that goes along with it. Gabe and I have previously discussed our love languages, but for this week’s adventure into trying new things, we wanted to explore some other aspects of interaction to continue to get to know each other and how we can effectively communicate. We landed on two new tools that have been helpful to go through. Continue reading “52 Weeks of Trying New Things | Week 8 | Relationship Building Exercises”
