At the suggestion of one of my blogger friends, last month I applied to be a NewsBreak contributor as a way to monetize my writing. As I’m now a stay at home mom, I love that it has offered me the flexibility to write whenever I have time, with no deadlines or quotas to hit. I hadn’t heard of the NewsBreak app before my friend shared about it with me, but I have enjoyed staying up to date on local and national news through it. You can also access it on the web if you don’t want to download the app.

Why Be a Contributor
This platform is seeking contributors that share local news stories in both article and video formats. I chose the article format because that’s what I enjoy more, but there is a separate application to be a video contributor – I know a lot of you truly excel in that realm!
You get paid based on a few factors, but it boils down to how valuable they feel your content is along with the amount of page views you receive. If your content covers a meaningful topic, your article can be included in their daily newsletter which gets you automatic exposure. I recently wrote a piece about little-known pet-friendly businesses and that got included in the newsletter.
If you’d like to apply to be a contributor, you can do so here. If you’d like to follow me on NewsBreak, here’s my profile!
They provide you with helpful analytics for each article, and as you can see below, I’ve been able to get some decent traction in just over a month.

Requirements
There is no charge to sign up or apply as a contributor, but in order to apply for monetization on the platform, you must post at least 10 articles and gain 100 verified followers. I was able to accomplish this in about a week. When you post content that resonates with people, they are fairly quick to follow you on this site, which is helpful! More information on their requirements can be found here.
After I applied for monetization, they approved my application in around 2-3 weeks, so it does take a little time to go through. They send payouts via Tipalti and you will get paid on the 15th of the month for the previous month’s earnings. Learn more about their monetization terms here.
I’ve earned money in just the first month of writing, so to me that’s better than a lot of other outlets I’ve tried in the past that take so much time to get established. I appreciate that they give you all the tools needed to easily publish content and though they do review each post before it goes live, it generally takes less than 24 hours and usually closer to 4 hours for them to mark it as live once you submit it.
Before you go, this is another one of my favorite apps to earn money each week. Have you heard of NewsBreak? Do you think you’ll apply to be a contributor or maybe just be a consumer of their content? Let me know if I can help with any questions about NewsBreak! If you join, let me know and I’ll be glad to be your first follower!

Thanks for sharing! This is the first time I’m hearing of NewsBreak. I’ll have to look up that payment method first because it is new to me and I know most of those portals don’t work in Jamaica. I think only Paypal, Zelle and Payoneer work here (to my knowledge at least).

How long did it take you to become monetized on Newsbreak? I applied about 3 weeks ago and still….crickets. I have 500 (about half registered) followers and 16 articles – so I know I meet the requirements.

I believe it took them about 2-3 weeks to approve my application. Wasn’t fast

This was really helpful! Thanks.
Did you receive payment for the first 10 articles which were required for monetization?

Thanks! This was really helpful.
Quick Question: Were you paid for the first 10 articles you wrote in fulfillment of monetization requirements?

I’m glad! I didn’t receive payment until I met the 10/100 requirement but once that was approved, all my articles were eligible to be monetized, including those first 10. Not all articles will make money if they don’t get much traction.

Great information, thanks for sharing! So if you write an article for the app, I assume you couldn’t post it to your personal blog as well, could you?

I’ve repurposed some of my blog posts to use for the app – i don’t believe there’s any rule against it but posting the exact same one might not be good for SEO

I applied for monetization 23 days ago and am still waiting. I’ve heard from some writers it is taking up to 45 days. It is hard to stay motivated to write there when not sure if they will approve me, but I keep writing about 2 per week. I like writing about local news, attractions, and events, hopefully, I get approved.

I felt the same way while waiting, very frustrating but I bet you will get approved! Best of luck 🤞
