The Sugar Demons

This book is a breath of fresh air. I’m tired of seeing strategies like “drink water to curb cravings” or “eat a piece of celery when you crave sugar” because they just don’t work (at least for me). This is the first book I’ve read that actually presents holistic strategies and turns beating the addiction to sugar into a game of sorts. As someone who is competitive, this suggestion appeals to me and I’m currently in the process of implementing some of the tips. The author is honest about how addictive sugar can be and one part that really struck me was the mention of how we’ve been conditioned our entire lives to view sugar as a reward. Birthday parties = cake and other sweets, celebrations = dessert, doing well in school = sweets, feeling down = sweets. It’s HARD to break that mindset, but this book is quite useful in giving you ways to actually make it happen.

Cruise Ship or Nursing Home

This is a book that was given to me when I was under chiropractic care at a Maximized Living Center. The title was a little weird and if you know me, you know I tend to gravitate to the odd and unique things in life, so I ended up reading it out of curiosity. It is an incredibly powerful read, making you consider the long term impact your nutritional and lifestyle choices will make on your ability to be independent when you are older. It contains a nutrition plan (not a diet) that is sustainable and practical, based on whole foods and no products, shakes, or gimmicky things to buy.

Genius Foods

This book is the brainchild of health and science journalist, Max Lugavere. I first found out about him through his podcast and read the book after realizing I wanted to learn more. His mother was diagnosed with dementia at an early age and he has been on a quest to find out more about the link between nutrition and brain health since then. My own grandmother also struggled with this terrible disease, so I have been interested in this topic and want to find any possible ways to prevent others from suffering this way. Max talks about crucial ‘genius foods’ we need to be focusing on at any age to improve our memory and mental clarity as well as to protect our brain as it ages. I’ll share one of my favorite genius foods from the book – blueberries!!

Eat To Live

Author and Dr. Joel Furhman is well-respected for his wealth of knowledge in the health and nutrition realm, and for good reason. This book is another one that will help you facilitate a healthy relationship with food and mindset change. If you’re a foodie like me, you may often feel like you live to eat, but as the title suggests, the book explains how to shift your perspective to look into the healing power of food. It goes into depth about what foods fuel you best, how you can eat to conquer cravings and the best ways to stop your food addictions. It includes helpful recipes and menu plans to get you started. I like that it’s simple and focuses on increasing your intake of plants.

These are some of my top picks for those of you who may be looking to make lasting and sustainable changes to improve your health this year, and not just fall into the dieting mindset.
