Not sure where the time has gone, but we are already at week 27 of my trying new things challenge! As you know, I’m always searching for new types of enjoyable movement to keep things interesting, so when I saw there was a bungee fitness studio less than 2 hours from me in Cornelius, North Carolina, I could not wait to check it out. I contacted owner Melanie Taylor back in February before we went on our cruise and asked about taking a class in April. She was so helpful in giving me information about the weekend classes she had available at her studio, PHphysique!

When my husband and I arrived at the studio, Melanie helped us get set up and provided little cubbies where we could place our belongings. We signed the usual waivers then got fitted with a harness and bungee cords that were appropriate for our height and weight. After realizing I had gotten dressed too quickly that morning in unmatched socks, I was so glad when our trainer Brittany told us we would be removing our socks for the class. Fashion faux pas averted. Melanie had let me know some like to wear more than one layer of leggings to avoid chafing. I ended up being fine with the leggings I wore but Gabe was glad he wore joggers over his shorts.

The floor was a soft but sturdy foam-like surface which was nice and clean. Brittany started off the class by helping us get comfortable with our bungees and leading us in some stretches, squats, and lunges. It was the first time for all 4 of us in this Neo (beginner) class, so that made me feel at ease!

Brittany explained that the circular mark on the floor where we were standing was our “anchor point” and where we would start our runs and jumps. She showed us to start our runs with our left foot on the mark and how many steps to take as we practiced jumping and leaning forward to trust our bungees. It was a weird feeling at first just letting myself go and falling, but once I relaxed, it was SO fun! She taught us star jumps where we would stretch out our arms and legs at the end of the jump, as you’ll see pictured below. Gabe wins for best facial expressions, as always 🙂

We did our runs and jumps into all 4 corners of the studio and that alone had me working up a sweat! Next, Brittany had us move into doing some push-ups with claps in between and let me tell you, that’s probably the only time in my life I’ll successfully be able to clap in between push-ups (thanks, bungee!!!) I felt like some kind elite athlete for a minute there.

We then did some plank varieties – full planks, high fives with our partner as we planked, and single leg planks. It might look like dance moves that are just “fun”, but it is definitely a solid full-body cardio and core workout that will leave you breathless and sweating!! At the end of the roughly 30-minute class, I was spent but so happy because it was such a fun class.

As you can see below, the studio is nice and open, with space for bungee classes, TRX suspension training, and kettlebell classes. Definitely check out all the classes available on the PHphysique website. Melanie told us she got her start with as a personal trainer with TRX training and later developed an interest in bungee as some saw it as just an accessory but she saw its usefulness for intense fitness training.

I thought it was so neat to learn that they have been able to help a client with Cerebral Palsy to strengthen the ligaments and improve function through bungee training! What an innovative option for those with joint issues and needing low impact training. The normal class size is 8, so it’s the perfect size for a girls’ weekend activity or bachelorette party!

Prepare For Your First Bungee Class By Bringing:

  • Water bottle
  • Thick leggings
  • A body ready to jump, fly, sweat and have FUN!

Melanie also offers 3-day intensive training for those interested in starting their own bungee fitness business. As it’s not a franchise, she provides entrepreneurs and fitness professionals the skills and freedom to operate their facilities as they see fit, once they learn about bungee. Depending on your interests, you could combine bungee fitness with yoga, kickboxing, TRX, HIIT workouts, or anything else you would like. I can’t wait to see bungee increase in popularity and more studios open across the US (and hopefully more in North Carolina soon!)

Are you ready to Fly Yourself Fit with bungee fitness? I hope you get a chance to try it soon! I’m so grateful to Melanie for all the wonderful photos of our class and for sharing about her background and passion for helping others get fit. Brittany was a great instructor for our first class and I’d love to go back for another class if I get the chance. You can find the information and location for PHphysique below!

      1. I’m in Kansas so odds are if anything like this does come my way it’ll start in Kansas City. Which I’m not too far from, so definitely a possibility

  1. That looks so fun! I worry though, with my “mom pelvic floor” if it would be a challenge for me since I can’t really do too much jumping at the moment. I’ll be looking for new workout options once we move at the end of May!
